Universal gives Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs movie with Michael Fassbender awards-friendly release

This year’s awards season may have proved that you don’t need to release a movie in the fall for it to be considered for the Oscar,s but that’s not changing the studios’ habits. Indeed, Universal has decided to give Steve Jobs a traditional awards season release.

The film popped up on Box Office Mojo’s schedule today. It will be released on Oct. 9.

That’s the same day that the Casey Affleck, Chris Pine thriller The Finest Hours opens. Halle Berry’s Kidnap and Warner Bros.’ Vacation reboot with Ed Helms also open that day.

Just last week, Universal announced that cameras started rolling on Steve Jobs, which is based on Walter Isaacson’s biography about the Apple co-founder. Michael Fassbender stars in the title role and Aaron Sorkin wrote the script. Boyle is directing.

Other members of the cast include Seth Rogen, Kate Winslet, Katherine Waterston, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jeff Daniels.

Boyle is best known for directing Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours. Sorkin won an Oscar for The Social Network and created HBO’s The Newsroom.
