Independence Day helped to launch Will Smith into a household name. Roland Emmerich enhanced the disaster movie genre and this role turned Smith into an action hero. The film, which was released back in 1996, became a huge box office success and a sequel is in the works, even though Smith will not be returning to help save the world yet again.
