8. The Debate
In Season 4 Leslie Knope runs for city council, and while previous seasons found comedy in the craziness of running a local government, Season 4 allows us to explore the hilarious insanity that is a local election. The majority of the episode is devoted to an incredible debate between everyone running for city council. The episode hilariously parodies characters from various different ideologies with both Fester Trim, a gun activist who wants to create assault rifle vending machines, and Manrico Della Rossa, who wants to fight for animals like they’re people. “The Debate” is also a parody of the idea of televised debates in general, like with one hilarious moment of Joan Callamezzo reading comments from Twitter “because apparently that’s something that happens now.” We see both how great of a politician and public speaker Leslie is, as well as how downright insane Pawnee is that her opponents actually have serious support.
