10. John Ford holds the record for most Best Director wins, but he only directed one film that actually won Best Picture - 1941’s How Green Was My Valley. A number of his movies were nominated for the top prize (sadly, The Searchers was not) and his first to get the nod was Arrowsmith.
The 1931 film is based on Sinclair Lewis’ story of a doctor, played by the dashing Ronald Coleman, who falls in love with a nurse (Helen Hayes). At first, he tries to be a country doctor, but it doesn’t pay enough, so he travels to the West Indies to battle a bubonic plague outbreak.
Unlike other early sound films, it’s not completely hampered by the technology of the day and is surprisingly fast-paced. It’s a good example of Ford’s early sound work, proving that he still could utilize the talent he curated during the silent days.
