1. The recent opening up of the Best Picture race has yielded some surprising nominees. One that caught many by surprise was A Serious Man, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It’s a weird movie, starring Michael Stuhlbarg (who isn’t exactly a “star”) as a Jewish man in Minnesota bumbling through a series of unfortunate events. Sure, everyone expected the film to be nominated for its screenplay, but the Best Picture nomination completely caught everyone off guard. It’s more of a movie “by the Coens and for the Coens” that their fans would appreciate. Obviously, many of those fans have Academy votes.
