9. Barbara Stanwyck, Ball of Fire
Barbara Stanwyck was nominated multiple times, but the fact that she never won is one of the great cinematic crimes. Most people know about her performance in Double Indemnity, but one of her best nominated performances came in the Howard Hawks screwball comedy Ball of Fire. In fact, while the Academy sadly ignores comedy performances today, several actresses were nominated for their performance in screwballs in the ‘30s and ‘40s.
