10. May Robson, Lady For A Day
Let’s go way back in time for No. 10. While Hollywood has always been accused of glorifying youth, the Academy does have a history of finding performances by older actresses that deserve to be nominated. This goes way back to Marie Dressler winning the fourth Best Actress trophy for Min And Bill.
But one performance by an older actress that deserved to actually win was May Robson’s performance in Frank Capra’s first great film, Lady For A Day. Robson wound up losing to Katherine Hepburn, but her heartbreaking performance as a poor woman who wants to impress her daughter when she comes home should not be lost to the dustbin.
