5. Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier, Sleuth
I hate to put Olivier on this list again, but many of his nominated performances do seem to have been in his lesser-known films. In reality, this slot is going to be a cheat - somehow, both Olivier and Michael Caine were nominated for the intense cat-and-mouse game that is Sleuth. They both lost out to Marlon Brando’s The Godfather performance though.
The 1972 film was Joseph L. Mankiewicz final film and is really difficult to find, since it’s never been released on DVD. It’s an incredible tour de force of acting, as Caine and Olivier are the only actors in the film.
