9. Raymond Massey, Abe Lincoln in Illinois
President Abraham Lincoln has provided actors with great roles. While Day-Lewis is the first actor to win for playing the 16th president, he wasn’t the first to get a nomination. Raymond Massey played Lincoln on Broadway and reprised the role in Abe Lincoln in Illinois, a stately version of the president’s life story. It moves a bit fast to squeeze in so much in less than two hours, but Massey is in full command in the role.
