1. Colin Firth, A Single Man
The most recent performance to be nominated for an Oscar that certainly shouldn’t be forgotten about is Colin Firth in A Single Man. The film, directed by fashion designer Tom Ford (who really should try to make another one), centers on a gay British professor in Southern California in the early 1960s. The film is decidedly quiet and understated, but is still a fascinating character study. Firth won the next year for The King’s Speech, but his role in A Single Man proves that he doesn’t have to play A Great Man to be good.
