'Robocop's' Joel Kinnaman in talks for former Tom Hardy role in 'Suicide Squad'

Joel Kinnaman, who starred in the recent Robocop remake, is in early talks to take the role of Rick Flagg in the DC Comics movie Suicide Squad. The role was initially supposed to be played by Tom Hardy.

Back in December, when Warner Bros. announced the main cast for the David Ayer-directed movie, Hardy was among the big names in the cast. Had Hardy taken the role, it would have been his second in a DC Comics movie, since he had the thankless task of playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

Hardy left the film in early January and Jake Gyllenhaal began talks to reunite with his End of Watch director. However, Gyllenhaal left the negotiation table a few days later.

Now, both TheWrap and The Hollywood Reporter are both reporting that Kinnaman is in talks to play the relatively obscure DC character. Rick Flagg is considered the leader of the group of villains, who are sent on suicide missions that no one else will take.

The cast also includes Will Smith as Deadshot; Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn; Jared Leto as The Joker; Cara Delevingne as Enchantress; and Jai Courtney as Boomerang. Viola Davis has said that she’s going to play Amanda Waller.

Noteworthy, THR says that Hardy may have left the film due to script issues. Apparently the movie was still being written when casting was underway. Plus, Hardy also has a packed schedule of projects, which may have also forced him out.

Suicide Squad is supposed to hit theaters on Aug. 5, 2016, just a few months after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in March 2016. That film has already finished principal photography, so Suicide Squad is far behind, especially since Kinnaman isn’t even officially signed.
