3. The Broadway Melody, Harry Beaumont, 1929
The Broadway Melody was the second Best Picture winner and the first with sound. Had the Academy existed like it does today, the film probably would have received technical awards. But as the Academy only had six categories at the time, the film wound up winning Best Picture.
Today, the film exists merely as a historical curiosity. There’s not much reason to see it as entertainment, unless you are interested in seeing where the “Broadway Melody” song from Singin’ In The Rain debuted.
