4. The Greatest Show On Earth, Cecil B. DeMille, 1952
To me, the biggest mistake the Academy ever made was gifting the 1952 Best Picture trophy to Cecil B. DeMille’s bloated The Greatest Show On Earth. It’s Charlton Heston’s first movie, so he’s clearly unsure of himself. Betty Hutton is overacting like Annie Get Your Gun on steroids. Cornel Wilde is speaking with an awful accent. A toy train explosion is the finale. Oh, and just for good measure, James Stewart is hidden behind clown make-up for the entire movie.
But hey, Gloria Grahame is in it, so it’s not completely awful. (OK, it is...)
