10. Dances with Wolves, Kevin Costner (1990)
Part of this list is trying to judge these films on their own merits, not on the fact that they beat greater films released during the year it won. So yes, I won’t argue that of course, Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas should have beat Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves. Everyone knows that already.
The issue with Dances though is that it doesn’t quite seem like the kind of movie that should be showered with awards. It’s ponderous (especially if you sit through Kostner’s super-long cut) and stretches out a fairly banal story. But the film’s craftsmanship shouldn’t be completely ignored. Kostner is surprisingly adept at directing and gives a fairly decent performance.
