2. Crash, Paul Haggis, 2005
Oh, the big one. Had 2005 not been such a strong year in film, the Academy may have been forgiven for giving Paul Haggis’ trite Traffic knock-off about race in Los Angeles the top prize. Unfortunately, 2005 was the year of Captote, Brokeback Mountain, Munich and Good Night, And Good Luck.
Crash is a grating, annoying film. The acting - aside from Brendan Fraser (yes, the Brendan Fraser has a Best Picture winner on his resume) - isn’t too awful, but the way the film is put together is uninspired. Come on, there are so many better fractured movies that could have won Best Picture.
