Mel Gibson is about to return to the director’s chair, with Andrew Garfield as his star in Hacksaw Ridge. The World War II drama is being sold to distributors around the world and Lionsgate is close to getting domestic rights.
The project was first reported on in November, when Garfield began talks for the project. He will play Private First Class Desmond T. Doss, who saved 75 men at Okinawa despite refusing to fire a weapon. He was able to save the men, despite being injured by a grenade and hit by a sniper.
Hacksaw Ridge will be written by Robert Schenkkan, who also wrote Gibson’s Oscar-winning Braveheart.
As Gibson’s first directing gig since 2006’s Apocalypto, the film earned interest from international distributors at the European Film Market in Berlin. IM Global has already successfully sold it to several labels in Europe and Asia, notes Deadline.
Lionsgate is close to getting U.S. rights, notes The Hollywood Reporter. The deal could be worth between $10 million and $12 million.
The film has a $45 million budget and will be produced by Cross Creek Pictures and Demarest Films.
While Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man franchise has stalled, Garfield is lining up interesting projects like Hacksaw. He’s currently working with Martin Scorsese on Silence.
