Remember when Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg actually fell asleep while President Obama was giving his State of the Union address last month? She now admits she was drunk when she dozed off, leaving her head dangling down.
In what’s probably one of the last explanations we would expect her to give, Bader Ginsburg told an audience member at George Washington University she wasn’t “100% sober” in that moment.
“You went to the State of the Union this year, and you fell asleep," the woman started to say, which drew laughs from the rest of the audience.
The 81-year-old Supreme Court Justice laughed, "As I often do."
“We sit there, stone-faced, the sober judges, but we’re not — at least I wasn’t — 100% sober, because before we went to the State of the Union we had dinner together,” she explained, CNN reports.
“I vowed this year, ‘Just sparklingwater, stay away from the wine!’ But in the end, the dinner was so delicious it needed wine to accompany it,” she added.
When she got home, one of her grandchildren had seen it and called her. "She said, 'Bubbe, you were sleeping at the State of the Union!'" she laughed.
Next year she’ll likely stick to that sparkling water.
