At the end of the second season premiere of HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the British comedian called on his fans to tweet insults at Ecuador’s president, Rafael Correa. It turns out that Correa is really sensitive to social media insults and actually shot back at Oliver, calling him an “oxymoron.”
During the segment, Oliver noted how Correa holds weekly meetings with the press and public, which feature weird things like dancing clowns. But most bizarrely, Correa uses the platform to call out anyone who insults him on social media. One time, he even called for an 18-year-old kid on Facebook by name.
So, Oliver decided to try and see if he could get under Correa’s skin, so he hurled insults at him. Then, he wanted fans to do the same on Twitter.
The segment did get attention in Ecuador, so obviously Correa was going to hear about it. Despite being the leader of a country, he reacted exactly the way Oliver expected him to. In one message, he wrote, “are there even any English comedians?”
“In Latin America, we are proud to have citizens and not subjects,” he wrote in another one, notes The Daily Beast. “They’re making someone famous who probably thinks the capital of Ecuador is Kuala Lampur.”
In other tweets, he said that English comedians are an oxymoron and also told him that he makes “too much noise for such little nuts.”
It looks like Oliver has some new material for Sunday’s episode.
