Can I really call All Things Must Pass George’s third-best solo album? Yeah, I think it is. The album is bloated, goes on way too long and the Apple Jam bonus disc feels completely pointless. At the time, George had so much material that never made Beatles albums, but he decided to put it all out at once. Had he tried to streamline it to a single record, it would be a much stronger set today.
But that doesn’t mean that ATMP doesn’t deserve its status as one of the best albums of the 1970s. It is a masterpiece, despite its over-indulgence. “My Sweet Lord,” “What Is Life” and “Beware of Darkness” are among the best songs George ever recorded.
