George could often be criticized as being preachy, trying to push his religious views on his listeners. Living in the Material World is George’s most explicitly spiritual album, but it’s also surprisingly his best. He knew exactly how to package his views, writing witty lyrics matched with the best musicians behind him.
Living also proved that George learned his lesson from All Things Must Pass. He kept the songs compact, mixing songs with secular themes and more spiritual tunes. The soft love track “Be Here Now” still sits comfortably next to his anti-consumerism song “Try Some, Buy Some.” The album’s title track is a complete microcosm of George’s work - learning how to live in the material world, while still holding on to his beliefs.
