'Fifty Shades of Grey' gets passed by British movie board without cuts, gets 18 rating

Fifty Shades of Grey has already passed the stringent eyes at the MPAA here and now’s it’s also been given the OK in the U.K. The British Board of Film Classification gave the film an 18 rating and passed it without requesting cuts.

The full rating goes into much more detail than the MPAA’s U.S. rating.

“The film contains strong sex and nudity, along with the portrayal of erotic role play based on domination, submission and sado-masochistic practices,” the statement reads. “There are also strong verbal references to such practices and the instruments used.”

Fifty Shades’ producers also won’t have to make any cuts to the 125-minute movie.

In the U.S., the MPAA gave Fifty Shades an R-rating, listing “strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity” as its reasons.

Had the film stuck to novelist E.L. James’ work more closely, it probably would have received an NC-17 rating. Some scenes were cut, including an infamous scene involving a tampon, director Sam Taylor-Johnson told Variety.

Fifty Shades is based on James’ erotic novel of the same name and stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. It opens in the U.S. on Feb. 13, the same day it hits theaters in the U.K.
