A Costa Rican toucan named Grecia that was injured last month by a group of vandals will get a second chance at life. Thanks to technology and donations from citizens, Grecia is getting a 3D-printed prosthetic beak.

Grecia lost over half of the top part of the beak when he was attacked with a wooden block. According to the Agence France-Presse, Garcia’s story went viral and citizens donated $3,000 to help get the beak fixed.
However, Grecia will not be able to return to his natural habitat. According to The Costa Rican News, the bird will have to be cared for at the Zoo Ave animal rescue center in Alajuela. The center takes in around 3,000 animals each year.
As the AFP notes, Grecia’s story is just one of the many animal cruelty stories from Latin America that are going viral. Social media has raised awareness of these cases, helping animal rights groups push for stricter punishment of animal abuse. At the moment, governments often only impose a small fine, if they prosecute at all.
“The visibility that social networks give to animal cruelty puts more pressure to pass laws,” Cynthia Dent, executive director for the Humane Society International in Latin America, told the AFP.
