'Chicago Fire' spin-off 'Chicago Med' in the works, pilot to air this season

Since there can apparently never be enough medical dramas on television, NBC is moving ahead with Chicago Med, a second spin-off from Chicago Fire.

The Chicago Med team is expected to be introduced in a planted pilot, which will air as Episode 19 of Fire’s current season. According to Deadline, the team behind the camera will be Fire creators Derek Haas and Michael Brandt. Of course, executive producer Dick Wolf will also be on board.

Med will be another ensemble drama, with a cast that includes a psychiatrist, pediatrician and a nurse. The actors will join as guest stars with options to become regulars.

The new pilot isn’t a complete surprise, since NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt and president Jennifer Salke both mentioned it during last month’s Television Critics Association Press Tour.

“It's a bit of an experiment to see how those characters come out,” Salke said, notes The Hollywood Reporter. “[Dick Wolf] had such a good run with the crossover episodes and created a world that moves around, with these shows that move around each other. I think it's natural that he wants to create a medical component to that. He looks at will the paramedic stories and fire butt up against that? I think it's sort of an organic way to see if it feels like it can sustain its own show.”

Wolf was also the executive producer behind Law & Order, which also had several spin-offs, including one that’s still on air - SVU. Fire also spun off Chicago PD and all three are expected to be renewed for next season.

Maybe next, Wolf can do a spin-off called Chicago Pizzeria or Chicago DA, which sounds more likely.

Also, NBC already does have a past with Chicago-based medical dramas. ER was also set in the Windy City.
