We know Luke, Han and Leia will be returning in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, but it's been a bit of a mystery which other characters from the series might be popping up in the new movies. Now we're getting word that Billy Dee Williams might be making an appearance.
Billy Dee Williams, who played Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars original trilogy, was asked in an interview with Cinelinx about his involvement in the new Star Wars films. He said though he will not be appearing in The Force Awakens, he has a feeling he'll be showing up at some point in the new series.
"I can’t imagine them not bringing Lando back," Williams said.
Other than that, Williams didn't seem to know a whole lot about the new franchise, admitting he hasn't seen the Force Awakens trailer. He would not go into detail and it's not totally clear if he's basing these statements off conversations he's had with Disney, or if he just assumes J.J. Abrams would want to bring Lando back at some point. And to be fair, that's a logical assumption to make, because who wouldn't want to see Lando Calrissian back on screen again?
Williams actually recently reprised his famous role in the animated series Star Wars Rebels.
The actor is clearly passionate about Star Wars, attending a number of conventions and embracing his legacy as Lando, so it would be great to see him involved in the sequels in some way, even if it's just a brief cameo.
It has been noted that the new trilogy will focus mainly on the new characters played by John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac, as Mark Hamill recently said. We know in addition to Luke, Han and Leia, we'll also be seeing R2D2, Chewbacca and C-3PO again, but it's unclear who else. And, even though Abrams is focused on the new storylines and characters, it's hard to believe he could resist bringing back some old characters too.
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will be released on December 18th, 2015.
