Authorities said that two people are dead following a massive pileup of 18 vehicles on a Western Pennsylvania freeway Wednesday afternoon.
The Associated Press reported that the victims have been identified as Timothy Floravit, 35 and Leonard Mink, 67.
Floravit died of chest and stomach injuries he sustained in the crash and Mink, a truck driver from Kentucky, was killed when he was struck by another vehicle after exiting his.
KDKA noted that the nine car and nine truck pileup happened on Interstate 80 around 1:30 p.m. during Lake Effect snow showers.
Although weather is believed to have played a major role in the crash police have no yet determined if it was the only factor.
“We had two back to back squalls come through the county, made visibility very difficult,” said Vern Smith, the director of Emergency Services for Clarion County.
Elsewhere in the county and about 15 minutes after the pileup happened, a 73-year-old man died after driving his car off the road. He was not wearing a seat belt and his death has been attributed to a heart attack.
