9. Penny Serenade, 1941
George Stevens’ Penny Serenade earned Grant his first of two Oscar nominations and both were definitely deserved. The film chronicles the love affair between Julie (Irene Dunne) and Roger (Grant). The key scene in the film is Grant’s passionate plea to a judge to allow them to keep their adoptive daughter, even though he lost his job. It’s a brilliant piece of acting and probably his best single scene.
