'Selma' duo Ava DuVernay, David Oyelowo making Hurricane Katrina movie

Selma director Ava DuVernay and her star, David Oyelowo, are teaming up for a movie about a more recent event that changed America: Hurricane Katrina. The duo are developing a film about a love story during the devastating hurricane.

The project will be produced with Participant Media, with DuVernay writing the script and directing. According to Variety, Oyelowo is still in talks to co-produce and star. They haven’t scheduled a date to start filming.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that this will be DuVernay and Oyelowo’s third film together. They previously worked together in her acclaimed 2012 film, Middle of Nowhere, which was also a Participant production.

“Hurricane Katrina is one of the most important social and environmental stories of our time,” Participant’s Jonathan King told Variety. “Ava DuVernay has shown herself to be highly skilled at bringing intimacy and contemporary urgency to epic events. We have been looking for the right way to get back in business with Ava, and with David Oyelowo, and are proud to re-team with them on her original idea, which we believe will be a powerful film.”

Oyelowo starred in Selma as Martin Luther King Jr. and earned acclaim for his performance, which earned a Golden Globe nomination. However, he was not nominated for an Oscar. He also appeared in Interstellar, A Most Violent Year and Lee Daniels’ The Butler.

As for DuVernay, Selma was her first big studio project. She actually started her career in publicity before she made her feature film directing debut with 2010’s I Will Follow.

Selma was nominated for two Oscars - Best Picture and Best Original Song for "Glory."
