Russell Crowe thinks he knows why there aren’t more women in big movies and that’s because too many actresses are looking for roles that don’t fit their age.
In an interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly, the director of The Water Diviner said that more women should be ready to play older characters, just like he is. In his new film, the 50-year-old plays a father with two grown sons.
“To be honest, I think you'll find that the woman who is saying that (the roles have dried up) is the woman who at 40, 45, 48, still wants to play the ingénue, and can’t understand why she's not being cast as the 21 year old,” the Gladiator star said.
Crowe went on to explain that the reason why Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren, for example, can still find roles is because they are looking for parts that fit their age.
“Meryl Streep will give you 10,000 examples and arguments as to why that's bulls**t, so will Helen Mirren, or whoever it happens to be,” he said of the argument that there are less roles available for older actresses. “If you are willing to live in your own skin, you can work as an actor. If you are trying to pretend that you’re still the young buck when you’re my age, it just doesn’t work.”
“The point is, you do have to be prepared to accept that there are stages in life,” he added later in the interview. “So I can’t be the Gladiator forever.”
Sadly, the part Crowe seems to forget about is that Hollywood still has to offer these roles in the first place. Hollywood is reluctant to give women of any age major roles in blockbusters, a point made too clear by the top-grossing films of 2014.
As Entertainment Weekly points out, only three of the Top 10 highest grossing movies of 2014 had women in lead roles and none were over 40.
