SXSW organizers announced the first slate of movies that will have their world premieres at the festival in Austin, Texas. The opening night film will by comedian Russell Brand’s new documentary, BRAND: A Second Coming.
Brand’s new film follows the struggles of celebrity in the 21st century. It is directed by Ondi Timoner.
The first of the six other movies announced today is A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. Directed by Sara Hirsch Bordo, that documentary tells the inspiring story of Lizzie Velasquez, who has gone from cyber bullying victim to an anti-bullying activist.
Ex Machina, the first film directed by 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland, will have its North American premiere. Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson star in the cerebral thriller. Alicia Vikander also stars.
Hello My Name Is Doris is a new film starring Sally Field as a 60-year-old woman who tries to break into the Brooklyn hipster scene. Max Greenfield, Beth Behrs, Jack Antonoff, Wendi Mclendon-Covey, Stephen Root, Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Reaser and Tyne Daly co-star. It is directed by Michael Showalter.
Karyn Kusama’s The Invitation is about a reunion of friends that becomes a nightmare.
The Miles Staples documentary Mavis!, by Jessica Edwards, will have its world premiere.
Lastly, Adam Nootnick’s Son of the Congo will be screened. The documentary traces Serge Ibaka’s journey from the Congo to the NBA.
Selma director Ava DuVernay and RZA are the keynote speakers for SXSW’s film festival, which runs from March 13-21.
