Overstock.com to compete with Amazon by launching own streaming service

Better late than never. Overstock.com announced on Tuesday that it plans to launch its own streaming service, even if its top competitor, Amazon, has a head start.

Overstock.com CEO Patrick M. Byrne made the announcement at NATPE in Miami Beach. He hopes to get the video on demand service up and running by mid-2015 with around 30,000 titles.

“We already have the traffic,” Byrne said, reports The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re looking for a bigger and bigger share of their wallet.”

Byne claims that the site gets 25 million to 40 million unique visitors a month and - like Amazon - they will use customer buying history to recommend content for each customer. The site is second to Amazon in retail web sales, the site says.

Variety reports that the service will be linked to the “Club O” loyalty program for frequent customers and costs $20 annually. However, access to the VOD service would be an additional cost.

Overstock.com is hoping that it can break into original programming. Of course, it has a lot of ground to make up, since Amazon already has two Golden Globes in its collection for Transparent and is now even planning on making and distributing movies.
