'Maze Runner' actress Kaya Scodelario joins 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'

Kaya Scodelario, who appeared in Fox’s surprise hit The Maze Runner, will star in Disney’s fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film.

The casting was announced by producer Jerry Bruckheimer on Twitter. He called her a “talented young actor,” noting her roles in The Maze Runner and Skins.

It’s not clear what role she will play, but it is very clear that Bruckheimer and Disney want the franchise to get younger. Back in November, they cast The Giver and Maleficent star Brenton Thwaites, who is probably taking over Orlando Bloom’s former position in the franchise. Still, the studio is trying to court Javier Bardem for a villain role.

Johnny Depp is expected to play Jack Sparrow again. Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane and Stephen Graham are all coming back as well, with another Keith Richards cameo still in the cards.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be directed by Kon Tiki team Joachim Ronning and Epsen Sandberg. It will be filmed in Australia and is scheduled for July 7, 2017, six years after 2011’s On Stranger Tides.
