A long-gestating biopic about Hollywood icon Montgomery Clift has landed at HBO and will star Matt Bomer.
The project was first put together over a year ago as an indie film, simply titled Monty Clift. The script was originally written by Christopher Lovik, although Love Is Strange writers Ira Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias will work on a rewrite, notes Deadline.
Director Larry Moss will executive produce with Pier 3 Pictures’ Michael Din and Anonymous Content’s Tony Lipp and Alix Madigan.
Clift had a difficult life, dying at age 45 in 1966. He was known for his good looks and unique acting style, shown off in films like A Place In The Sun, Red River and From Here To Eternity. But after a motorcycle accident ruined his good looks, he made less movies. His final notable appearances were in The Misfits and Judgement at Nuremberg.
The film is coming together similar to how The Normal Heart, which also starred Bomer, came together. That Ryan Murphy project started as an indie film, but found a home at HBO and was critically acclaimed.
Aside from The Normal Heart, Bomer is known for USA’s White Collar and his role in Magic Mike. He just finished work on the sequel, Magic Mike XXL.
