Martin Scorsese’s prayers have been answered. Fábrica de Cine and SharpSword Films have agreed to produce and finance the director’s next project, Silence.
Variety reported that Scorsese has wanted to make this film for over two decades, and now he will finally have a chance to do so. Fábrica de Cine and SharpSword Films are funding and producing the film under the joint label of FM Films, LLC.
In addition to directing, Scorsese will produce. Other producers include Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Randall Emmett, Irwin Winkler and Barbara DeFina. George Furla and Chad Verdi are set to executive produce. Gaston Pavlovich will also produce alongside executive producers Dale Brown, Matthew Malek and Tyler Zacharia.
As Deadline noted, the film is an adaptation of Shusako Endo’s novel of the same name. The film follows a group of 17th century Portuguese Jesuits who are driven underground during their proselytizing mission to Japan. Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, Adam Driver and Tadanobu Asano will star.
Production will begin in Taiwan on Jan. 30, and Silence is expected to come out in 2016.
