Martin Scorsese, who probably has too many projects on his plate any way, has finally run into someone with more power to stop him from working than Hollywood financiers: Bill Clinton.
Sources told The New York Times today that Scorsese was working on a documentary on the former president with HBO, but it now stuck thanks to arguments over creative control and what information would be included. Clinton wanted more control over the questions Scorsese would ask him, according to these sources.
Clinton spokesman Matt McKenna told the Times that these sources were “inaccurate,” but didn’t say anything more. A Scorsese rep did not comment.
“It’s not happening soon but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen,” an HBO spokesman said.
The project was first announced back in December 2012 and Scorsese was certainly excited about it. However, Clinton’s camp reportedly wanted final cut and more control, as they were clearly nervous that the project might provide an unfavorable look at the family just as Hillary Rodham Clinton is considering a 2016 presidential run.
Still, Scorsese’s team denied this claim and the Times is reporting that that film could take years to finish.
The Departed director has countless other projects in the works, including Silence, which he finally got financing for.
As for the Clintons, this is the latest entertainment project about them to be shut down. The most infamous project was the NBC miniseries. CNN also wound up scrapping a documentary about Hillary Rodham Clinton.
