Keira Knightley says her unique name was the result of a spelling error

Keira Knightley had an amazing 2014, which she capped off by earning her second Oscar nomination. All that attention means that people finally have to learn how to correctly spell her first name and the only way to do that is technically incorrectly.

In a new interview with Elle U.K., the British actress said that her parents spelled her name wrong when they went to register her birth. Her father wanted to name her “Kiera” in honor of a Russian ice skater. However, he mother switched the “i” and “e,” forgetting the “i before e, except after c” rule.

“Apparently, when she came back he said: ‘WHAT THE F*CK? You’ve spelt her name wrong!’” Knightley recalled. “What were they going to do, though? Once it’s on the piece of paper, it’s on the piece of paper. And that’s me. A spelling error.”

Knightley has embraced her misspelled name and loves breaking the rules.

“I’ve always hated the idea that you should be wearing this or that, because it makes me feel like I’m getting everything wrong. I hated it at school, and I don’t want it as an adult,” she said. “If you want to wear a f*cking flowerpot on your head and that makes you happy, then wear a f*cking flowerpot on your head.”

Knightley was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Imitation Game, but she has some tough competition, including Boyhood’s Patricia Arquette. It’s her first Oscar nomination since 2006, when she was up for Best Actress for Pride and Prejudice.

The actress is also expecting her first child with husband James Righton.
