John Leguizamo to star in former James Gandolfini project 'Taxi-22' for CBS

Taxi-22, a passion project for the late James Gandolfini, could soon finally reach the small screen. Now at CBS, the pilot will star Chef actor John Leguizamo.

The casting was first reported by Deadline. The actor will also co-executive produce with his managers, Jeff Goldenberg and Sam Maydew. Dennis Erdman and Clark Peterson are also executive producing.

Taxi-22 is based on a French Canadian comedy created by Patrick Huard, who will also executive produce the American version with Francois Flamand. Gandolfini will also receive a posthumous executive producing credit. Tad Quill wrote the pilot.

Gandolfini had been working on the project for years before his tragic death in June 2013. It originally started at HBO in 2010 and landed at CBS only weeks before his death. CBS had planned to produce a pilot for the current TV season, but struggled to find a lead star to play the foul-mouthed taxi driver.

Now with Leguizamo on board, the pilot can finally move forward.

Leguizamo is currently performing around the country in his one-man show Latin History for Dummies and will next be seen in the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy The Nest. He also appears in The Experimenters, which is being shown at Sundance.
