How many of George Lucas' ideas were used for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'?

Last week, George Lucas mentioned that he had already written his own Star Wars: Episode VII before Disney bought Lucasfilm. That left some wondering if any of his ideas were used by J.J. Abrams and his team for The Force Awakens.

In an interview with CinemaBlend this week, though, Lucas confirms that nothing he wrote in his early versions of Episode VII will be seen on the big screen.

“The ones that I sold to Disney, they came up to the decision that they didn't really want to do those,” Lucas explained. “So they made up their own. So it's not the ones that I originally wrote [on screen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens].”

Lucas refused to go into further detail on what his own ideas were for the film.

Earlier this month, Lucas revealed to USA Today that he had actually started planning the third Star Wars trilogy. But Disney approached Lucas with the idea of buying his company and the deal was done in October 2012.

“It's better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself,” he told USA Today. “The time is more important to me than the money.”

We do have to wonder if this means that all the ideas Lucas had for a sequel trilogy 30 years ago were ditched. Of course, we won’t know until we’re sitting in a theater on Dec. 18 when The Force Awakens opens.

The Force Awakens is being directed by Abrams, who wrote the final script with Lawrence Kasdan. In addition to Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, the new movie will star Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley.
