George Lucas has a new movie coming out and, no, it has nothing to do with Star Wars. Still, the ghost of the franchise he created follows him wherever he goes, so obviously he was going to face Star Wars questions when he really wants to talk about Strange Magic.
In an interview with USA Today, Lucas revealed that he was actually planning on making a seventh Star Wars film to start a third trilogy before he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in October 2012.
He was hoping to have Episode VII done and released in May 2015. Then, he would sell his company. Disney said it was interested in Lucasfilm just before he started work.
“It's better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself,” he said. “The time is more important to me than the money.”
Lucas is now planning on making those “experimental” movies he’s been talking about for decades. The first of his small movies will be the animated flick Strange Magic, which Disney has agreed to release under its Touchstone banner. It comes out on Jan. 23.
“The only thing I really regret about Star Wars is the fact I never got to see it — I never got to be blown out of my seat when the ship came over the screen," Lucas told USA Today. "The next one, I'll be able to enjoy it like anybody else.”
Lucas didn’t give further details on his planned trilogy, including whether or not he planned to direct them himself. He hasn’t directed a movie since the third Star Wars prequel, Revenge of the Sith.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is being directed by J.J. Abrams and hits theaters on Dec. 18.
