'Fifty Shades of Grey' gets R rating for graphic nudity, strong sexual content and unusual behavior

Fifty Shades of Grey will hit theaters next month, much to the excitement of fans of E.L. James’ the book trilogy, and the film has now been given a rating.

The MPAA gave it an “R” rating, due to its “unusual behavior.” As expected, it also has “strong sexual content” and “graphic nudity.”

Variety notes fans of the book are probably wondering how it didn’t get an NC-17 rating but of course, the film needed an R rating in order for fans to actually get to see it.

The film centers on an S&M relationship between a dominant and a submissive – starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.

Dornan has revealed in order to get into character, he did some research at a “sex dungeon” and watched them do “whatever they were into.”

He told Elle UK, "I saw a dominant with one of his two submissives.”

As The Telegraph points out, some fans of the book have criticized the rating, saying it won’t be as good if the sexual content is toned down.

Fifty Shades of Grey hits theaters Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day.
