Drew Barrymore is reflecting on her own childhood, which is influencing the way she will parent her two daughters with husband Will Kopelman.
Barrymore was in rehab by age 14 and got emancipated from her parents the next year, so her kids will undoubtedly have a different upbringing.
She told More Magazine, "I didn't really have parents, you know? And therefore the kind of parent I will be is a good, present parent. In a way, maybe that was a detriment to my youth, but it'll be the biggest asset to my adulthood."
She does still have a relationship with her mother, Jaid Barrymore, saying she’s now taken over the mother role. "[I] look after her. That is how I feel good about [our relationship],” she said.
Still, even though she had an unconventional childhood with a lack of adult role models, she called herself a "happy, blithering idiot" as a child.
"I don't know how to feel differently about it because I don't know what another life would be like, so it's hard to pretend or imagine or wish that it was different because it isn't. Even if I was a bad girl at moments here and there, I was never a bad person,” she said.
Barrymore and Kopelman have two girls; Olive, 2, and Frankie, 9 months.
