'Boyhood,' 'Gone Girl' and 'Birdman' earn nominations from American Cinema Editors

The American Cinema Editors announced their nominations for the Eddie Awards, which honor the best-edited films of the year. Editing is a key category at the Oscars, so these nominations give a good preview of how that category will look.

In the dramatic category, there was a tie, so the group had to add a sixth nomination. The nominees are: American Sniper (Joel Cox & Gary Roach); Boyhood (Sandra Adair); Gone Girl (Kirk Baxter); The Imitation Game (William Goldenberg); Nightcrawler (John Gilroy); Whiplash (Tom Cross).

The nominees for best edited Comedy or Musical feature are: Birdman (Douglas Crise & Stephen Mirrione); Guardians of the Galaxy (Fred Raskin, Hughes Winborne & Craig Wood); Into the Woods (Wyatt Smith); Inherent Vice (Leslie Jones); and The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling).

Getting at least a nomination for the Best Editing Oscar is a key victory for any real Best Picture hopeful. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, no film has won Best Picture without at least an ACE nod since Ordinary People back in 1981. So fans of Selma, Unbroken and The Theory of Everything should be worried that none of them made the cut.

In addition, nine of the last 12 winners of the ACE’s dramatic feature category have also won the Oscar.

Many of the editors up for the Eddie this year are previous Oscar winners. William Goldenberg won for Argo and Kirk Baxter shared the Best Editing Oscars for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Social Network. Joel Cox won for Unforgiven. Stephen Mirrione also won for Trafic and Hughes Winborne edited Crash.

The nominees for Best Edited animated film are: Big Hero 6 (Tim Mertens); The Boxtrolls (Edie Ichioka); and The LEGO Movie (David Burrows & Chris McKay).

The awards are handed out on Jan. 30 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
