6. The Homesman, Tommy Lee Jones
Sadly, The Homesman is another film that’s gotten lost in the shuffle, thanks to no wide distribution. It’s not like this Western would have been a blockbuster, but a wider audience certainly would have helped Hilary Swank. To me though, the headline was Tommy Lee Jones’ directing and his performance. He made a genuine Western. It’s not a neo-Western, but a film that could have been made 50 years ago and would have fit on a shelf with Red River and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
