7. Foxcatcher, Bennett Miller
Foxcatcher was one of the big reasons why I made sure I got to the Savannah Film Festival this year, since I was fully expecting a stunning masterpiece from a director who has already made two. Unfortunately, Foxcatcher doesn’t quite live up to the standards set by Moneyball or Capote, thanks to its snail-like pace. But director Bennett Miller’s ability to get stunning performances from Channing Tatum and Steve Carell can not be denied. Yes, Carell is pretty amazing, but Tatum brings surprising power to his role. Watching him destroy his hotel room was particularly shocking.
