8. Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn
Never in a million years did I ever think I’d like a Marvel movie as much as Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, it does fall to the crippling Marvel blueprint, where the final act is just the heroes fighting a giant ship, but for the first two acts of the film, it’s easy to see that James Gunn’s unique sensibilities were not lost. Guardians is, shockingly, an action sci-fi movie that doesn’t forget about that pesky “science fiction” part.
