Usually it is difficult to see Best Foreign Language film frontrunners before the Oscars, but Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida is already available on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, so you’ve got no excuse to miss it. Lasting just 80 minutes, the film focuses on a young girl’s discovery that she is a Jew, just days before she was ready to become a nun. Her aunt, her sole living connection to her family, takes her on an emotionally heart-wrenching journey to learn her past. Pawlikowski decided to not only shoot it in black and white, but also used the 1.33:1 square ratio, proving that old tools should still be considered by today’s filmmakers. Agata Trzebuchowska and Agata Kulesza also give wonderful, understated performances that feel completely natural.
