The sequel to Legendary’s smash hit Godzilla reboot will have some competition - from Godzilla.
On Monday, Toho, the Japanese studio that made the original Godzilla over 60 years ago, announced that it will make its own Godzilla movie for the first time since 2004. It will be the studio’s 29th film in the franchise.
“This is very good timing after the success of the American version this year: if not now, then when?” a Toho spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. The studio said that its licensing deal with Legendary does not stop it from continuing its own Godzilla series.
Production on the film will start next summer and is going to be marketed internationally. Toho hasn’t cast any stars yet and hasn’t set a budget, although it’s safe to say it won’t be a $200 million movie. Still, Toho is hopeful that using CGI will help help the film compete.
It’s possible that the Toho movie could be out before Legendary’s Godzilla 2. That film isn’t scheduled for release until June 2018. Gareth Edwards, who helmed this year’s Godzilla, is also on tap to direct a Star Wars spin-off movie.
Edwards’ movie grossed $524.9 million worldwide and was also a critical hit.
Godzilla is more than just the King of the Monsters. He’s the king of movie franchises. Toho has been making Godzilla movies since 1954 and its latest was Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004. The franchise does hold the title for the longest-running cinematic franchise in history.
