Authorities said a mother was killed after her 2-year-old son reached into her purse, pulled out a handgun and accidentally shot her with it.

KREM-TV reported that the 29-year-old woman was shopping with her four children Tuesday morning in a Wal-Mart in Hayden, Idaho, when the accidental shooting occurred.

The Associated Press noted that Kootenai County sheriff's spokesman Stu Miller confirmed that the victim was the child’s mother and her husband was not in the store at the time of the incident. He arrived a short time later. The children were all taken to a relative’s home.

Wal-Mart closed the store for the day and released the following statement:

"A very sad incident occurred at our store today involving the death of a female customer," the statement read. "We are fully cooperating with the Kootenai County Sheriff's deputies as they investigate this matter."

The woman’s identity has not yet been released. Officials said she did possess a concealed weapons permit.
