Authorities said that three pedestrians were killed and several more were injured in a crash as they left a children’s Christmas pageant in Redondo Beach on Wednesday evening.
Reuters reported that in addition to the deceased, police said nine people were hurt when a driver ran into the crowd using a crosswalk outside the church around 8 p.m.
CBS Los Angeles noted that law enforcement said the driver, who was among the injured, is believed to have blown a red light before striking the pedestrians and crashing into another car.
“Preliminary information provided to RBPD is that a motor vehicle drove north bound on Pacific Coast Highway through the intersection of Vincent Street, striking several pedestrians, the vehicle continued driving, ultimately colliding head on into another vehicle,” said Redondo Beach Police Sgt. Shawn Freeman.
The female behind the wheel is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs and was arrested on felony charges of DUI and manslaughter.
Most of the injured are in critical condition.
