'The Interview' makes $15 million online alone, streamed over 2 million times

The Interview is being screened after all – in both theaters and online but the latter is proving to be more lucrative.

The Seth Rogen and James Franco-starring film, still the center of international attention, made $15 million online alone.

The film, available to stream on YouTube, Google Play and Xbox Video, grossed a much less $2.8 million in the 331 independent theaters it was released in but an impressive amount of people went to see it.

LA Times reports it was announced on Sunday that anyone who wishes to see the film can now buy it on iTunes.

Rory Bruer, Sony's head of distribution, said in a statement, "While this is a completely unprecedented circumstance without proper comparisons, we are very pleased with how it is doing both theatrically, where we are seeing numerous sellouts across the country and online, where it remains at the top of many charts.”

It was expected that the film would make around $25 million during the holiday weekend, but that was before Sony cancelled its release then backtracked.
