Authorities said an 18-year-old was killed Monday after he was attacked by a shark while spearfishing off Port Douglas in Queensland.
The Australian reported that Daniel Smith was fishing with his father and some friends off Rudder Reef when he was bitten by a shark.
When Smith’s friends were able to pull him back to safety on the boat, he had serious injuries on his right leg, right arm and groin. He was also losing a lot of blood.
ABC News noted that authorities said his friends contacted emergency responders and performed CPR on him, but Smith suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after the boat reached the shore.
"A lot of large blood vessels [are] in the groin area, so for him to go into cardiac arrest that quickly it would be blood loss," said Cairns Queensland Ambulance spokesman Greg Thiedecke.
Another spearfisherman died of a heart attack after he was bitten by a shark in the same area in 2004. The last fatal shark attack in Australian waters was when a swimmer was bitten last September.
